The stage is set for Uganda to host one of the most prestigious volleyball events in the region, the CAVB Zone V Volleyball Club Championship, scheduled for February 2025. This announcement was made by the Executive Committee of CAVB Zone V, designating Kampala as the host city for this annual event. The championship, organized in conjunction with the Uganda Volleyball Federation, marks a new chapter in regional sports history.
Scheduled to run from February 16 to February 23, 2025, the week-long championship will be held at the iconic Lugogo Indoor Stadium, renowned for hosting numerous high-profile sports events. This will be the first major regional volleyball tournament under the leadership of Uganda’s Sadik Nasiwu, who succeeded Rwanda’s Fernand Ruterana as the CAVB Zone V President during the 2024 CAVB Congress in Morocco.
“We received bids from Rwanda and Uganda, a decision was made to award it to Uganda” Said Sadik Nasiwu, CAVB Zone V President.
The championship schedule begins with the arrival of teams and a technical meeting on February 16, followed by six days of intense competition from February 17 to February 22. Teams will depart on February 23, concluding the event. This meticulous scheduling promises to deliver an exhilarating experience for athletes and fans alike.
The defending champions—Rwanda National Police (men) and Kenya Pipeline Corporation (women)—are expected to put up a spirited fight to retain their titles. As per the competition structure, the top three teams from each of the 12 CAVB Zone V countries will qualify for the championship, with defending champions allowed to send four teams.
Uganda’s hosting of the event is no surprise, given its track record in organizing international volleyball competitions. Kampala previously hosted the All-Africa Games qualifiers for women in 2019. However, Uganda’s attempt to host the 2020 Women’s U-20 African Nations Championship was thwarted by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
CAVB Zone V, the regional body responsible for the championship, comprises 12 member countries: Burundi, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. This diverse representation promises to make the tournament a melting pot of talent and cultural exchange.
The women’s rankings from the 2023 championship held in Rwanda underscore the dominance of Kenyan and Rwandan teams. Kenya Pipeline Corporation clinched the top spot, followed by Rwanda Revenue Authority and Armee Patriotique Rwandaise. Uganda’s Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) secured fifth place, showcasing the country’s growing competitiveness in women’s volleyball.
On the men’s side, the 2023 rankings highlighted Rwanda National Police as champions, with Uganda’s Sport-S Volleyball Club earning a commendable second place. This performance has heightened expectations for Uganda’s teams in the upcoming championship, with fans hoping for a home-ground advantage to propel them to the top.
The Lugogo Indoor Stadium is expected to be a hive of activity, with volleyball enthusiasts from across the region converging to witness the thrilling matches. The venue’s state-of-the-art facilities and Uganda’s reputation for hospitality are poised to make the event memorable for all participants.
Hosting this championship is not just a sporting achievement but also a testament to Uganda’s growing stature in the regional sports arena. It is a significant opportunity to showcase the country’s organizational capabilities and promote tourism, with visitors exploring Kampala’s rich cultural and historical sites.
The economic impact of the event is also noteworthy. Hotels, transport services, and local businesses stand to benefit from the influx of players, officials, and fans. This aligns with Uganda’s broader goals of leveraging sports for economic growth and international visibility.
As the countdown to February 2025 begins, the Uganda Volleyball Federation and the local organizing committee are leaving no stone unturned in their preparations. From logistical arrangements to marketing campaigns, every detail is being meticulously planned to ensure the championship’s success.
The spotlight will also be on individual players who have consistently performed at the highest levels. Star athletes from Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda are expected to light up the courts with their skills and determination, adding to the excitement of the event.
Uganda’s hosting of the CAVB Zone V Championship is a golden opportunity to inspire the next generation of volleyball players. With thousands of young fans expected to attend, the event serves as a platform to nurture talent and foster a love for the sport.
The presence of top-tier teams from across the region will elevate the quality of competition, setting new benchmarks for excellence in volleyball. The championship is also an avenue for players to gain exposure and attract the attention of scouts and sponsors.
As Uganda gears up for this landmark event, the anticipation is palpable. The tournament promises not just thrilling volleyball action but also a celebration of unity and sportsmanship across the region.
