
Mamelodi Sundowns shot stopper, Denis Masinde Onyango has been nominated in the the PSL goalkeeper of the season category as the The Premier Soccer League (PSL) announced the nominees for the Goalkeeper of the Season award.
The former Uganda Cranes skipper who started his football career at Nsambya FC, SC Villa in Uganda before joining St George in Ethiopia, Supersport, Black Aces, Bidvest Wits and Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa leads the three-man list along with AmaZulu’s Veli Mothwa, and Sifiso Mlungwana of Golden Arrow and his impressive record of fifteen (15) clean sheets in 24 league matches so far this season puts him in the driving seat for the accolade and has also conceded only 10 goals in the league thus far.
Onyango will be remembered for his tremendous contribution to Uganda national team, as he led The Cranes to two Total Africa Cup of Nations finals (Gabon 2017 and Egypt 2019), as well as winning the CAF Africa player of the year award based in Africa in 2016, having guided Mamelodi Sundowns to their first Total CAF Champions League title.
Onyango had 79 caps to his name before retirement from the Uganda national football team this year, since making his international debut in 2005 against Cape Verde.
On the other hand, the lanky Bafana Bafana Custodian, Mothwa who joined Usuthu from Chippa United midway through the season has played 24 league matches thus far and has conceded just 18 goals with 10 clean sheets to his n whilst Mlungwana has, so far, featured in 28 league games for Abafana Bes’thende, and he has kept 10 clean sheets while conceding 28 goals.
