In a thrilling encounter at the Felix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Nigeria secured a commanding 2-0 victory over Cameroon in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 Round of 16 clash on Saturday.

Cameroon started brightly, with Zambo Anguissa creating an early opportunity for Karl Toko Ekambi, but the striker’s attempt was thwarted by a solid defensive block from William Ekong.
Nigeria, eager to assert dominance, thought they had an early lead when Ademola Lookman’s 9th-minute corner found Ajayi, only for VAR to disallow the goal due to offside.
However, the Super Eagles broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, capitalizing on a defensive mistake as Victor Osimhen set up Lookman, who calmly slotted the ball past the Cameroonian goalkeeper Onana.
Nigeria’s intensity continued to trouble Cameroon, and Lookman sealed the victory just before full time, converting his own through ball to make it 2-0.
The triumph propels Nigeria into a quarter-final clash with Angola who qualified for the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON for the first time in 14 years, while Cameroon bows out of the tournament at the Round of 16 stage.
With this clinical display, the Super Eagles showcased the quality and experience needed to potentially secure their fourth continental title.Reflecting on the match, Cameroon’s Coach Rigobert Song acknowledged the challenges faced by his youthful team:
"We had the youngest team; there are players who are discovering. We gave the opponent the opportunity to put us in difficulty; it's part of the game. As I've said before, we are in reconstruction. It's by making these mistakes that we will grow. Football is like that. The AFCON is a competition that is played on all levels: technical, tactical, and especially mental. I have a youthful that is discovering; it played, and we still have a lot to learn."Rigobert Song, Cameroon’s Coach:
Nigeria’s Coach José Peseiro, looking ahead to the quarter-final against Angola, emphasized the need to remain focused.
"We will now focus on our next match against Angola, which is having an excellent tournament. We must take this opponent seriously, so we will continue to sleep early and eat pasta (laughs). Jokes aside, all the teams at this stage are capable of winning the tournament."José Peseiro, Nigeria’s Coach

Elsewhere, in a thrilling display of skill and determination, Angola punched its ticket to the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, marking a historic moment for the team that last achieved this feat 14 years ago.The Palancas Negras delivered a resounding 3-0 victory over Namibia in the round of 16 clash, showcasing their prowess on the field.
The match kicked off in Bouake with a charged atmosphere as fans rallied behind the Angolan squad. Striker Gelson Dala emerged as the hero, netting a crucial brace that propelled Angola to victory.
The turning point occurred early in the game when Angola’s goalkeeper Neblu received a red card in the 14th minute for handling the ball outside his area, leaving his team with 10 players.
Bethuel Muzeu seized the opportunity for Namibia, initiating a one-on-one chance with the expelled goalkeeper. Despite the setback, Angola maintained control, with Gelson Dala capitalizing on a well-orchestrated play by Gilberto and Fredy to open the scoring.
Namibia’s challenges intensified as Lubeni Haukongo received a second booking, reducing them to 10 players as well. Gelson Dala capitalized on a free-kick, heading home to double Angola’s lead before halftime.
In the second half, Namibia’s efforts to recover created openings that Gelson Dala exploited, setting up substitute Mabululu for Angola’s third goal. Mabululu’s composed finish sealed the deal for the Palancas Negras, securing their spot in the quarter-finals.
Angola’s next challenge awaits them against Nigeria in the quarter-finals, as they aim to replicate the success of their golden generation 15 years ago.
COACHES REFLECT ON THE MATCH
Namibia’s head coach, Collin Benjamin, acknowledged the uphill battle his team faced after the red card, describing it as a “soccer lesson.” Despite the bitter loss, he urged his team to stay resilient and emphasized the significance of reaching the knockout stage after 26 years.
“We started very good. You could see the intention of this team, I think the turnaround was the send of the Angolan goalkeeper. In my experience in football, this is a situation you wouldn’t want to be in because after the red card the opponent will come in stronger thinking they are a man down, it is basically a soccer lesson. And obviously within the situation, you get a 1-0, you get 2-0, 3-0 so in the end I think it’s a well-deserved win to Angola. Congratulations to them but I think as a Namibian, it’s a bitter pill to swallow but we have to keep our heads up. We have to look forward if you just think about it tomorrow morning, you will realize it took us 26 years to record our first victory in the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON, we came here in 1998, and in 26 years, we past the group stage to coming to the knockout, so we have to take it step by step”.Collin Benjamin – Namibia head coach
On the other hand, Angola’s head coach, Pedro Gonçalves, expressed gratitude to his team for the hard-fought victory. He praised their resilience and acknowledged the difficulties faced both on and off the field. Gonçalves highlighted the importance of focusing on each match and shared his optimism for the team’s continued journey in the tournament, while also acknowledging the challenges they overcame to reach this point.
"I would like to thank the team for securing this qualification. All the matches we have played are different and it comes with different dynamics and we saw that today. It was a difficult game and fantastic at the same time. It’s important to keep being resilient and focus on each match as we try to make efforts in each game. I would like to congratulate the team, the staff and everyone in Angola.Even if people in the country are having difficulties to go by their duties and work, this victory will put smiles on their faces.. Both teams had nothing to lose. Against Namibia we went out together with the right strategy and also made a lot of mistakes but we corrected it. After the red card, it wasn’t easy but I asked the players to focus on the task they had to do it on the field and this was the reason we created more chances and kept our calmness and played well at the end. When we started people didn’t believe in my plans and even personal things that didn’t have anything to do with work. But I have continued with my objectives and now we are here. I won’t say we are going to win the trophy but we are going to continue to dream"Pedro Gonçalves – Angola head coach
