
By: Brian Sentuuya || The fervor of athleticism ignited the courts of Masaka city as the 2024 UMEA Solidarity Games commenced with a thrilling display of netball prowess on Good Friday, March 29th, 2024.
A cacophony of cheers echoed through the air as hundreds of goals graced the opening day, leaving spectators enraptured by the skillful performances on display. Leading the charge were perennial contenders Ngando SS, Kibuli SS, Madinah Islamic SS, and Kawanda SS, who embarked on their quest for victory with resounding triumphs during the inaugural day of action.
In the competitive Group A encounters, Ngando SS showcased their dominance by vanquishing both Kawempe Muslim and Nankabirwa Memorial with scores of 26-18 and 25-14, respectively. Meanwhile, Kadugala SS clinched a hard-fought victory against Bulo Parents with a narrow margin of 21-18. Not to be outdone, Kawempe Muslim battled to draws against both Nankabirwa Memorial and Kadugala SS, ending with scorelines of 18-18 and 22-22, respectively.
Group B witnessed Madinah Islamic’s formidable prowess as they triumphed over Kakungulu High (25-22) and Namagabi (27-21), while Namagabi and Kakungulu Memorial settled for a draw at 27 goals apiece. Hosts Masaka SS experienced a mixed bag of results, securing a victory against Kakungulu Memorial (18-14) but falling short against Kakungulu High (23-26).
In the fervent Group C clashes, Kibuli SS asserted their dominance by overpowering Amity SS (22-13) and Kisaana SS (36-12). Despite a setback, Amity SS rallied to defeat Kinaawa Mugongo (19-11), while Kinaawa Mugongo faced defeat at the hands of Kasawo Secondary School with a scoreline of 14-26.
Group D action saw Kawanda SS emerge victorious against Greenlight Islamic (17-15) and Wamatovu Muslim (33-09). Gombe SS showcased their prowess by toppling Busiika Muslim (25-20), while Greenlight also secured a win against Busiika Muslima (21-17).
As anticipation mounts for the upcoming matches, netball enthusiasts eagerly await the continuation of group stage matches on Holy Saturday, March 30th, 2024, with knock-outs slated for Easter Sunday before the grand finale on Easter Monday.
Beyond netball, the UMEA Solidarity Games feature competitions in football (boys and girls), volleyball (boys and girls), handball (boys and girls), table tennis (boys and girls), and badminton (boys and girls), showcasing the diverse sporting talents of participating schools.
The UMEA Solidarity Games epitomize camaraderie and sportsmanship among schools rooted in the Islamic faith, fostering a spirit of unity and excellence in sporting endeavors. As the tournament progresses, anticipation mounts for more thrilling matches and memorable moments in the days to come.
