By Brian Sentuuya || Vipers Sports Club has ushered in a new era by appointing Serbian coach Nikola Kavazović as their head coach in a brief but significant event held at St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende. Kavazović, 48, steps into the role following the departure of Charles Livingstone Mbabazi, who exited before the end of last season. The appointment of Kavazović marks a pivotal moment for Vipers SC as they aim to reclaim their dominance in the Uganda Premier League.
Kavazović has inked a two-year contract with the six-time Uganda Premier League champions, bringing a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the club. His extensive coaching resume includes stints with Botswana’s Township Rollers, Kenya’s AFC Leopards, South Africa’s Free State Stars, and most recently, Ethiopia Coffee. Additionally, Kavazović has helmed the national teams of Sri Lanka and Tajikistan between 2012 and 2014, showcasing his versatile and adaptable coaching style.
The Serbian tactician will be supported by a robust technical team comprising Fred Muhumuza, Jose Esdras, Ali Kimera, gym instructor Kato Ibrahim, and team doctor Michael Lule. Kavazović has expressed his intention to further strengthen his backroom staff with another assistant and a video analyst, underscoring his commitment to a meticulous and data-driven approach to football management.
Richard Wasswa, who served as interim head coach following Mbabazi’s departure, commendably guided the team through the tumultuous end of the 2023/24 season. Despite his efforts, the Venoms finished the season without any silverware, a disappointing outcome that ended their five-year streak of winning trophies. Wasswa’s tenure, however, laid a foundational stability that Kavazović is expected to build upon.
Vipers SC’s 2023/24 campaign was marred by inconsistencies and unmet expectations, which ultimately led to a trophy-less season. This underperformance has heightened the anticipation and pressure on Kavazović to revive the club’s fortunes. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to inject new vigor and tactical acumen into the team, aiming to restore its status as a formidable force in Ugandan football.
Kavazović’s previous successes in various leagues and national teams provide a solid foundation for optimism. His tenure with Township Rollers and AFC Leopards, in particular, highlighted his ability to adapt to different footballing environments and deliver results. Vipers SC will be hoping that his expertise and tactical nous can translate into immediate success on the pitch.
As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on St. Mary’s Stadium to see how Kavazović’s leadership influences the team. The Serbian coach’s strategic approach, combined with the club’s ambitions, sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting chapter in Vipers SC’s storied history. The journey to reclaiming glory begins now, and the entire Vipers SC community is ready to support their new head coach every step of the way.
