The 2024/25 Pepsi University Football League season is set to kick off on Tuesday, 17th September 2024, marking the beginning of yet another thrilling chapter in Ugandan university football. This year’s tournament will feature 23 teams, including debutants Muteesa I Royal University, competing for the prestigious title. With seasoned contenders and fresh talent on display, the stage is set for intense competition.
The 12th edition of the tournament promises new challenges and opportunities as the teams have been drawn into six groups. The official draw, held at Kati Kati Restaurant in Lugogo, grouped the participating universities, setting the stage for a fiercely contested group phase. Muteesa I Royal University’s entry has drawn significant interest as they make their debut in Group F, alongside Makerere University Business School (MUBS) and Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).
Each group is filled with fierce competitors, with only the top team from each group guaranteed a place in the quarterfinals. Two additional spots will be awarded to the best-performing second-place teams, making every match in the group stage critical. Teams will be required to bring their A-game if they are to progress to the knockout rounds.
In Group A, reigning champions Nkumba University will defend their title against Busitema University, Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), and ISBAT University. As defending champions, Nkumba is expected to be strong, but they will be tested by the hunger and determination of their opponents. With their eyes on another title, Nkumba will need to navigate a tricky group to secure their quarterfinal spot.
Group B sees Makerere University, one of Uganda’s oldest and most storied institutions, face off against Kumi University, Victoria University, and Ndejje University. Makerere will look to reassert their dominance in university football, but the competition in this group is fierce. Kumi and Ndejje have been steadily improving, while Victoria University is known for its unpredictability, making Group B one to watch closely.
Uganda Christian University (UCU), hosting the opening match on 17th September, headlines Group C alongside Kabale University, St. Lawrence University, and YMCA. Originally scheduled to be hosted by Nkumba, the opener was moved to UCU after Nkumba’s qualification for the Africa University Championships in Lagos. UCU, known for their tactical discipline, will aim to start strong and use home advantage to build momentum.
Group D brings together Kampala University, Gulu University, Bugema University, and Kampala International University (KIU). This group promises to be tightly contested, as each team has the potential to advance. Kampala University, with its experience, will be looking to dominate, but the unpredictability of the other teams could lead to some surprise results.
In Group E, Uganda Martyrs University takes on Muni University, International University of East Africa (IUEA), and the University of Kisubi (UNIK). Uganda Martyrs, a team with a rich history in the competition, will be expected to perform well, but Muni and IUEA have demonstrated that they are not to be underestimated. The battle for the top spot will be fierce, and any slip-ups could prove costly.
Group F is perhaps the most intriguing, featuring MUBS, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, and newcomers Muteesa I Royal University. MUBS, with their extensive experience, are favorites to top the group, but all eyes will be on Muteesa I as they look to make a strong impression in their debut season. MUST will also be eager to make their mark and advance to the next stage.
The new format, where the top team from each group qualifies for the quarterfinals and two best runners-up join them, adds extra pressure to each match. Every team will need to secure as many points as possible to boost their chances of advancing to the knockout rounds. The stakes are higher than ever, making every fixture crucial.
As UCU prepares to host the opening match, excitement is building across the university football scene. Fans are eager to see how the teams perform, especially the debutants, and whether any dark horses emerge from the group stages to challenge the established powerhouses. With such a diverse mix of teams, the league is expected to deliver many surprises and thrilling moments.
Muteesa I Royal University’s inclusion in the league represents a significant milestone, and their journey will be closely followed by fans and analysts alike. They face tough competition, but their entry adds fresh excitement to a league known for producing top football talent.
As the countdown to the first whistle begins, the 2024/25 Pepsi University Football League is set to offer football fans across the country an unforgettable season. With a mix of seasoned teams and rising stars, this year’s tournament promises to be a celebration of the best that university football has to offer. The road to the quarterfinals begins on 17th September, and every team will be fighting for their place in Ugandan football history.
