The 2024/25 Pepsi University Football League season is set to kick off on Tuesday, 17th September 2024, marking the beginning of yet another thrilling chapter in Ugandan university football. This year’s tournament will feature 23 teams, including debutants Muteesa I Royal University, competing for the prestigious title. With seasoned contenders and fresh talent on display, the stage is set for intense competition.

The 12th edition of the tournament promises new challenges and opportunities as the teams have been drawn into six groups. The official draw, held at Kati Kati Restaurant in Lugogo, grouped the participating universities, setting the stage for a fiercely contested group phase. Muteesa I Royal University’s entry has drawn significant interest as they make their debut in Group F, alongside Makerere University Business School (MUBS) and Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).

Each group is filled with fierce competitors, with only the top team from each group guaranteed a place in the quarterfinals. Two additional spots will be awarded to the best-performing second-place teams, making every match in the group stage critical. Originally scheduled to be hosted by Nkumba, the opener was moved to UCU after Nkumba’s qualification for the Africa University Championships in Lagos. UCU, known for their tactical discipline, will aim to start strong and use home advantage to build momentum.

Group D brings together Kampala University, Gulu University, Bugema University, and Kampala International University (KIU). This group promises to be tightly contested, as each team has the potential to advance. Kampala University, with its experience, will be looking to dominate, but the unpredictability of the other teams could lead to some surprise results.

In Group E, Uganda Martyrs University takes on Muni University, International University of East Africa (IUEA), and the University of Kisubi (UNIK). Uganda Martyrs, a team with a rich history in the competition, will be expected to perform well, but Muni and IUEA have demonstrated that they are not to be underestimated. The battle for the top spot will be fierce, and any slip-ups could prove costly.

Group F is perhaps the most intriguing, featuring MUBS, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, and newcomers Muteesa I Royal University. MUBS, with their extensive experience, are favorites to top the group, but all eyes will be on Muteesa I as they look to make a strong impression in their debut season. MUST will also be eager to make their mark and advance to the next stage.
