Uganda’s national netball team, the She Cranes, continues to cement its place among the top teams in global netball. As per the latest World Netball October 2024 rankings, Uganda has held on to its impressive sixth place, underscoring the nation’s growing reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the sport. Despite facing leadership turmoil within the Uganda Netball Federation, the She Cranes remain determined to showcase their prowess on the international stage.
Next on the She Cranes’ calendar is the much-anticipated Fast5 Netball World Series, which is scheduled to take place in Christchurch, New Zealand, on November 9-10, 2024. The Fast5 series, known for its dynamic and fast-paced version of netball, will offer Uganda an opportunity to compete with the world’s finest. The tournament will feature shorter quarters, power plays, and thrilling long-range shooting that make it an exciting spectacle for fans and players alike.
Uganda’s participation in this prestigious event will see them go head-to-head with five of the world’s top netball teams, including Australia (ranked 1st), England (2nd), New Zealand (3rd), Jamaica (4th), and South Africa (5th). These powerhouses of netball bring with them a wealth of experience, and Uganda will be keen to put up a strong performance against these formidable opponents.
Despite the internal struggles currently plaguing the leadership of the Uganda Netball Federation, the She Cranes have managed to keep their focus and determination intact. The team remains one of the best on the continent, holding the second-highest ranking in Africa. With 128 points in the global rankings, Uganda stands just behind South Africa, who holds 158 points, and ahead of regional rivals Malawi, who trail closely with 127 points.
Regionally, Uganda has also maintained a significant lead over its East African counterparts. Kenya, for instance, currently sits at 26th in the world rankings, a considerable distance from Uganda’s top-ten standing. This regional dominance is a testament to Uganda’s consistent efforts to nurture and develop its netball talent, positioning the She Cranes as the undisputed leaders in East African netball.
The Fast5 Netball World Series presents a unique challenge for the She Cranes. Unlike traditional netball, the Fast5 format demands quicker decision-making, increased physicality, and strategic use of the power play, where points scored are doubled. Teams also have the option to attempt long-range shots, which can dramatically shift the momentum of the game. Uganda will need to adapt swiftly to these demands if they are to make a significant impact.
The inclusion of the She Cranes in such an elite tournament is a reflection of the respect they command in international netball circles. Their rise from obscurity to become one of the top teams globally is a source of immense pride for Ugandans. For the players, the Fast5 series offers an opportunity to test their skills against the best and further solidify their status as a global powerhouse.
Off the court, however, the She Cranes face a different kind of battle. Leadership struggles within the Uganda Netball Federation have caused disruption and uncertainty, but the team has managed to stay resilient. The players and coaching staff have remained focused on their preparations, knowing that a strong showing in New Zealand will not only boost their global ranking but also bring much-needed positive attention to the sport back home.
The Fast5 World Series will not only be a test of skill but also of character for the She Cranes. In overcoming adversity and standing tall on the global stage, the She Cranes embody the spirit of Ugandan sportsmanship—a spirit that never gives up and always aims for greatness.
With the eyes of the world on them, the She Cranes are ready to fly higher than ever before.
