Team Uganda at the 4th African Youth Games

Uganda’s youth swimming team captured the spotlight at the 4th African Youth Games, leaving a mark with exceptional performances that included multiple national records and personal bests. The team, spearheaded by Suubi Peyton Mary and Isaiah Kuc, demonstrated that Uganda is rapidly becoming a force to reckon with in continental swimming, combining skill, determination, and a growing competitive edge.
Suubi Peyton Mary emerged as the star of the Ugandan contingent, competing in five events and breaking three national records. Her campaign began on December 12 in the girls’ 1500m LC freestyle final, where she clocked a time of 18:46:08. Finishing fifth overall, Peyton not only set a new national record but also sent a strong message that Uganda’s youth swimmers are capable of challenging the continent’s best.
The following day, Peyton demonstrated her versatility by competing in the 200m LC freestyle and the 50m LC butterfly. In the freestyle, she recorded a personal best of 2:22:62, finishing 14th, while in the butterfly, she touched the wall in 31:79 to place 17th. These performances highlighted her adaptability across different strokes and distances, as well as her consistency in high-pressure international competition.
December 14 saw Peyton deliver another remarkable performance in the 200m LC breaststroke. She qualified for the finals with a time of 2:50:23, setting a new national record. In the finals, she improved her mark further to 2:49:46, finishing fourth overall. This achievement reflected her exceptional resilience and determination, as she managed to outperform her own record under the intensity of final-round competition.
On December 16, Peyton competed in the 800m LC freestyle finals, finishing seventh out of twelve participants with a time of 10:00:51. Though seventh, her performance was significant as it established yet another national record, adding to her growing collection and reaffirming her position as Uganda’s top youth swimmer. Her consistent record-breaking demonstrates both talent and a strong work ethic.

Isaiah Kuc also delivered an impressive display over three events, asserting his potential as a rising star in Ugandan swimming. He began with the 100m LC freestyle, achieving a personal best of 56:71, finishing tenth. Isaiah then competed in the 200m LC freestyle, posting a time of 2:06:93 in the heats to qualify for the finals, where he finished eighth with 2:09:47. His performance reflected both his speed and endurance.
In addition, Isaiah showcased his sprinting prowess in the 50m LC butterfly, achieving a personal best of 27:37 and finishing ninth overall. His consistency across multiple events demonstrates his versatility and growing maturity as a competitive swimmer, making him one of Uganda’s most promising youth athletes.
Suubi Peyton Mary’s final results at the Games were a testament to her dominance: fifth in the 1500m LC freestyle (18:46:08, national record), 14th in the 200m LC freestyle (2:22:62, personal best), 17th in the 50m LC butterfly (31:79), fourth in the 200m LC breaststroke (2:49:46, national record), and seventh in the 800m LC freestyle (10:00:51, national record). Each performance reflected meticulous preparation and remarkable mental toughness.
Isaiah Kuc’s results included tenth in the 100m LC freestyle (56:71, personal best), eighth in the 200m LC freestyle (2:09:47, personal best in heats: 2:06:93), and ninth in the 50m LC butterfly (27:37, personal best). His ability to compete across multiple events, achieving personal bests in each, signals a bright future for Uganda in youth swimming.
As the African Youth Games conclude, Uganda’s swimming team returns home with pride, national records, and invaluable experience on the continental stage.
