Head coaches Steven Bogere and Francis Mugerwa
In a dramatic move that has sent shockwaves through Ugandan football, Lugazi Football Club announced today, December 22, 2025, the dismissal of its entire technical bench. Head coaches Steven Bogere and Francis Mugerwa were relieved of their duties, alongside assistant coach Gerald Efiti, goalkeeping coach Kizza Adam, statistician Alex Mugabi, and team doctor Jude Ssempijja. The club’s decision comes after a string of disappointing performances that failed to meet expectations, leaving fans and management frustrated.
The club confirmed in a statement released today that the sackings take immediate effect, citing the technical team’s inability to deliver results. According to the announcement, the decision was taken in the best interest of the club and its supporters, emphasizing that the management could no longer wait for improvement in form. The move sends a strong message that Lugazi FC is serious about reversing its current slide in the league.
Lugazi’s poor start to the season has left the team third from bottom of the table with just 10 points from 11 matches, a far cry from the hopes and expectations at the beginning of the campaign. The team’s struggles on the pitch have raised alarm among fans, pundits, and the club’s leadership, who fear that continued underperformance could lead to a relegation battle.
The decision to overhaul the technical bench followed last week’s 2–1 home defeat to Vipers SC in Najjembe, a result that extended Lugazi’s winless run to five matches. The loss highlighted tactical deficiencies and exposed vulnerabilities in both the defense and midfield. Supporters voiced growing frustration on social media, with many questioning whether the coaching duo had lost control of the squad.
Lugazi has already signaled that a new head coach will be appointed before their next league game, scheduled against NEC FC at Lugogo on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. Until the appointment is finalized, the club has promised no further comments. The upcoming fixture is now viewed as a critical test for the squad, with fans hoping for a swift turnaround under fresh leadership.
Steven Bogere joined Lugazi in October 2024, replacing Sadiq Sempigi, and his departure had been widely anticipated following a difficult start to the season. During his tenure, Bogere made history with the team when interim coach Oliver Mbekeka guided Lugazi to their first-ever top-flight win against Express FC at Nakivubo, a landmark moment in the club’s history. Despite these early signs of promise, consistency proved elusive.
Bogere’s coaching experience is extensive, having previously led clubs such as SC Villa, UTODA, Idudi FC, UPDF, Proline, Victoria University (defunct), and Onduparaka. He managed to keep Lugazi safe in his first full season, finishing 13th in the league with 31 points after 30 matches, narrowly avoiding relegation. His past successes, however, could not prevent the current campaign’s mounting challenges.
Ahead of the 2025/26 season, Lugazi strengthened its technical team by appointing Francis Mugerwa as co-coach in July, hoping his wealth of experience would stabilize the squad. Mugerwa, whose career includes stints at Proline FC, Maroons FC, Onduparaka FC, Kitara FC, Arua Hill SC, and Bright Stars, was expected to bring tactical discipline and renewed motivation. Fans initially welcomed the appointment as a sign that the club was serious about improving results.
Despite the combined experience of Bogere and Mugerwa, the team struggled to find form. Tactical inconsistencies, poor defensive organization, and a lack of goal-scoring threat frustrated supporters, who increasingly questioned whether the technical team could inspire the squad. The management’s patience finally wore thin, resulting in the unprecedented dismissal of the entire bench.
This season, Lugazi’s only two wins came against newcomers Buhimba United Saints and Calvary, both at home in Najjembe. Their inability to secure points on the road underscored tactical shortcomings and a lack of mental resilience, leaving the team vulnerable in away fixtures. Fans had hoped for progress under the co-coach structure, but the results painted a starkly different picture.
With the exit of the technical bench, Lugazi FC now faces a critical period as it seeks a new coach capable of stabilizing the team, boosting morale, and improving tactical performance. Management has made it clear that the next appointment will be decisive in shaping the club’s prospects for the remainder of the season. The need for immediate results has never been more pressing.
Supporters are now watching closely as the club prepares for its next outing against NEC FC. The hope is that fresh leadership will restore confidence, reignite ambition, and put Lugazi back on track in Uganda’s top-flight football. With relegation fears looming, the next few weeks will define whether the team can recover and reclaim pride for its fans in Najjembe and beyond.
