Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC, the top dog in Ugandan Women’s football , reaffirmed their superiority by outclassing Kampala Queens, showcasing their consistent winning approach and prowess in the game.
Agnes Nabukenya, the shining star, netted twice as the Valley Warriors sealed a 2-0 triumph over Kampala Queens in the FUFA Women Super League clash on Wednesday evening at Phillip Omondi Stadium Lugogo.
In the initially uneventful first 20 minutes of the match, Kawempe gained momentum as Agnes Nabukenya, playing in a striker role, took the lead. This breakthrough came in the 25th minute when Kampala Queens’ goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro’s mistake presented Nabukenya with a clear chance, and she adeptly punished the Kabojja-based girls for their earlier reckless play.
Following Nabukenya’s goal, Kawempe assumed control of the game, showcasing dominance in the midfield with impressive performances from the returning Hadija Nandago, Captain Phiona Nabulime, and Namutebi Kruthum. This led the newly appointed Kampala Queens coach, Charles Ayiekoh, to make a tactical change in the first half, substituting Damalie Matama with Inamanizabayo Florence in the 35th minute.
Despite Kawempe’s control, Kampala Queens attempted to equalize in the 37th minute through Zaina Namuleme. However, Adeke Juliet made a crucial save, denying Namuleme’s powerful strike near the goal post Agnes Nabukenya completed her brace with a polished in the final minute of first-half, thanks to a well-executed cross from Samalie Nakacwa.
In the latter part of the game, marked by a barrage of offensive maneuvers from both sides, Kampala Queens opted for a strategic reshuffle in their roster, unleashing Lilian Mutuuzo, Teddy Najjuma and Patricia Akiror onto the field, replacing Elizabeth Nakigozi, Shakira Mutibwa and Zaina Namuleme. However, their tactical maneuvering proved insufficient as they grappled with challenges in leaving a discernible mark on the astutely orchestrated lineup of Kawempe Muslim.
Despite the infusion of fresh talent, Kampala Queens found themselves in a sporting conundrum. The relentless attacks and intricate plays showcased by both teams heightened the intensity of the encounter. It was a proverbial clash of titans, and despite the Queen’s efforts to inject dynamism with the substitutions, the well-coordinated defense of Kawempe Muslim stood as a formidable fortress, resisting the onslaught of offensive maneuvers.
This marked Charles Ayeikoh’s first loss since taking charge, prompting him to focus on enhancing the performance of the Kabojja-based team based on the observations from this match. Looking ahead, Ayeikoh will be determined to make improvements and address the shortcomings highlighted in today’s game.
On the other hand , Kawempe Muslim maintained their dominance, securing their third consecutive victory over Kampala Queens in various competitions. Notably, they recently achieved a 1-0 triumph and a convincing 5-1 win in the FUFA Women Super League and Fufa Women’s Cup, respectively.
In the post-match interview, Ayub Khalifah Kiyinji expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasizing their commitment to building a squad focused on playing competitive football.
“We played good football, according to my understanding, and secured the win. We are in the process of building a team that is intended to play serious football,”
Said Ayub Khalifah Kiyinji in the post-match interview.
The valley warriors have taken the leading position in the standings, securing the top spot with a match advantage. They now sit above Kampala Queens, sharing an equal number of points at 10 but holding a superior goal difference of 4 goals compared to Kampala Queens’ 2.
What lies ahead for both teams?
The upcoming weekend will see several league fixtures unfold. Kampala Queens face an extensive journey to Masindi for a match against Lady Doves, whereas Kawempe Muslim LFC will be on home turf, hosting Wakiso Hill.
