Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC got the better of Uganda Martyrs Lubaga WFC this time, beating its crosstown rival 3-0 in the FUFA Women Super League clash played on Sunday at Kawempe Muslim SS Playground.
Kawempe seized the spotlight in the 16th minute when Yudaya Nakayenze nodded Agnes Nabukenya’s free-kick toward the goal, but Uganda Martyrs’ goalie Sharon Kaidu deflected it for a corner.
Jolly Kobusingye shook things up in the 18th minute, slamming a wicked left-footed shot into the net after Uganda Martyrs’ feeble attempt at clearing a corner.
Uganda Martyrs tried to level the score in the 25th minute, but Latifah Nakasi’s long-range missile from the center struck the crossbar, handing Kawempe a sweet goal kick.
With Uganda Martyrs on the offensive, Jolly Kobusingye, Kawempe’s defensive ace, pulled off a clutch clearance in the 42nd minute, denying Latifah Nakasi’s slick move past Kawempe’s custodian Juliet Adeke.
After the break, Uganda Martyrs pushed hard for a comeback, while Kawempe set their sights on doubling their lead.
Kawempe almost widened the gap in the 54th minute when Mary Kabaculezi sprinted towards the goal, but the ref called offside, putting a halt to the action.
Juliet Adeke, Kawempe’s guardian in goal, once again shut down Uganda Martyrs in the 58th minute, blocking Latifah Nakasi’s header near the post after a shaky clearance by Ritah Mushimire.
Coach Ayub Khalifah shook things up in the 60th minute, subbing in Allen Nassazi for captain Phionah Nabulime. With Allen on the field, Hadijah Nandago added some serious spice, giving the visitors’ defense a run for their money. In the 67th minute, she nearly extended Kawempe’s lead, but her left-footed rocket from outside the box kissed the crossbar with Sharon Kaidu, the Uganda Martyrs custodian, left watching.
In the 77th minute, Kawempe’s tactical squad brought in midfielder Babirye Hadijah for Yudaya Nakayenze, while Uganda Martyrs swapped Shamsa Najjuma for Kevin Nakacwa.
Agnes Nabukenya cranked up the heat in the 80th minute, nailing a stunning free-kick after Hadijah Nandago got roughed up outside Uganda Martyrs’ box.
Babirye Hadijah, a second-half dynamo, sealed the deal in the 83rd minute with a left-footed loop, capitalizing on Mary Kabaculezi’s slick layup in the box.
Kawempe’s victory dance over Uganda Martyrs marked the end of an unbeaten first round in the 2024 Fufa Women Super League campaign, extending their reign atop the FUFA Women Super summit to 21 points. They’re living large with a two-point lead over second-placed Kampala Queens, who pulled off a gritty 2-1 win against the struggling Wakiso Hills WFC.
